Joe Strummer once famously said, “People can change anything they want to, and that means everything in the world.” And with that spirit, the annual Gates of the West holiday benefit will take place Thursday, December 22 from 6pm-8pm ET. With a lineup produced by the charitable organization Love it to Life (Jesse Malin and Jeff Raspe), a special lineup of a few dozen musicians—Eugene Hutz, Jesse Malin, The So So Glows—will busk in front of the Joe Strummer mural on the side of Niagara (112 Avenue A) to celebrate the life and music of Strummer and the Clash, with all proceeds to benefit Music & Memory. If there’s rain or snow, the night will move inside, to the A7 stage at Niagara.

The 2003 video for Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros version of “Redemption Song” is the story of the mural’s creation (directed by Josh Cheuse). In 2013 following construction, the mural was repainted by artists Dr. Revolt and Zephyr with Strummer’s words “The Future is Unwritten.”

The after party will be 8pm at 96 Tears (110 Avenue A), the new bar dedicated to Howie Pyro, the world-renowned DJ, downtown legend and member of original 1977 CBGB punks The Blessed, D Generation, and Danzig. Read more about the life of Pyro and 96 Tears at the Village Voice.

Music & Memory is a non-profit organization that helps individuals with a wide range of cognitive and physical conditions to engage with the world, ease pain, and reclaim their humanity through the use of personalized music.
“Without people, you’re nothing.” – Joe Strummer

On Joe Strummer’s birthday, Friday, August 21 at 3:00pm ET (12:00pm PT and 8:00pm BST), the music and arts community is coming together for a global event to celebrate Joe Strummer’s legacy as a solo musician and singer of The Clash.

A Song for Joe: Celebrating the Life of Joe Strummer marks the seventh annual event honoring the late Clash frontman, organized by Gates of the West — an ongoing Clash tribute created by NYC musician/bar owner Jesse Malin and radio DJ Jeff Raspe — and Dark Horse Records. The two-hour show will stream for free on Strummer’s website and YouTube page, and all donations collected will benefit Save Our Stages, an organization helping independent venues during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The night will be hosted by Jesse Malin and will feature never before seen live footage of Strummer, alongside special performances and testimonials by many of the former Clash front man’s friends and peers.

“To see so many musicians and artists come forward to honor Joe is really touching,” says Joe’s wife Lucinda Tait. “Community was always important to him. Whether it was playing music with friends, organizing all night campfires, or hijacking festivals, Joe was always focused on bringing people together. Even though we can't all be in the same room together, I cannot think of a better way for us all to feel united. Joe would have loved this.”

“This tribute to Joe is not only a great way to honor him, but to also remind people how important his message is right now,” adds Malin.

Joe Strummer

Punk poet, musician, composer, actor and style icon, Joe Strummer spent his life smashing musical and cultural boundaries both as the singer of The Clash and as a solo artist. Songs like ‘Know Your Rights’, ‘London Calling’, ‘Rock The Casbah’, ‘Straight To Hell’, and ‘Coma Girl’ engulfed the global masses and sound as urgent and vital today as when they were written.

It was Strummer’s politically charged lyrics that helped bring punk to the masses. Calling out social injustices and giving a voice to the struggles of the working class, his lyrics struck a chord with legions of fans and the press alike, with Rolling Stone calling The Clash “the greatest rock & roll band in the world”.

He once famously said, “People can change anything they want to, and that means everything in the world.” And through his art Strummer played his part in shaping the musical landscape of the world and with it left an unrivaled and timeless legacy.

Save Our Stages

The mission of the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) is to preserve and nurture the ecosystem of independent live music venues and promoters throughout the United States. NIVA is making a final push to Congress to pass the Save Our Stages Act and the Restart Act in order to keep independent venues nationwide from closing permanently. Take action here.

Gates of the West

Jesse Malin & Jeff Raspe created Love It To Life and the Gates Of The West shows to bring together some of the best musicians and celebrate the music of Joe Strummer and The Clash. Every show is a benefit for The Joe Strummer Foundation, Music & Memory and other charities. The six sold out shows to date, have featured many special guests performing songs written and performed by Strummer and The Clash.

I wouldn’t be the person I am today without Joe Strummer and The Clash. He brought so many of us together – misfits, dreamers, outcasts, drifters and believers – proving that rock and roll can save lives. This music speaks to you and lets you know you are not alone, that knowledge is power. A world view from the gutter up to the stars, booming with a dirty backbeat and a burning soul, combining many rhythms and cultures, spitting it all out with a worldwide message of unity and life that constantly questions the establishment, but also has a sense of humor to keep you from getting too high on your horse.

Hanging out with Joe the few times that I did, you could see it was very clear that he walked it like he talked it. He was right there in the moment, open and ready for anything. He was also a great listener; he wanted to know who you were and what you thought. Mick and Paul have always been like that as well- very giving and respectful, down to earth...or street.

When I was asked by Cousin Jeff Raspe to be part of StrummerJam in 2017 I was a bit wary of treading on sacred ground, and especially bringing it to the homeland of London. A bunch of New York Yanks playing these songs in Camden Town made me skeptical and kind of nervous, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized how relevant all of this is at the moment. The spirit is needed now more than ever, so I accepted the challenge / offer, with a chance to help out some folks in need.

The Music and Memory part came from an uncle that Jeff and I have who has suffered terribly for many years with dementia. He loved rock and roll and ran night clubs in the 1970’s. Like so many of us, music can still be his best medicine. The Strummer Foundation was also a no brainer, supporting artists and youth that don’t have the means and giving them ways to be heard and get started up. Seeing the great events and shows they have put on for years with so many cool artists has been very inspiring.

The name, Gates of the West (which is one of my favorite Clash songs), came from the idea that the places and paths which connect us can create global unity through music. “Have guitar, will travel,” running from one port to another, making trouble. As the song says, connecting Camden Town to NYC, so we would do one in New York and one in London.

After the first rehearsal it was very clear how powerful and timeless these songs truly are. They have a secret mojo that reveals itself when released, from the 101ers to The Mescaleros, The Clash to The Latino Rockabilly War. Watching people find their own spin and take on the songs they picked to play was also really enjoyable and exciting. Getting to spit ‘em out at a high volume, under the hot lights, over dirty microphones in a packed, dark room with people dancing away their worries can’t be beat.

I would truly like to thank everyone who came out, played a song, sang along, humped gear, sponsored us (Wendigo Productions/Vive Le Rock), and celebrated the life and legacy of Joe Strummer on these magical nights; especially my band of maniacs, who had learn over 39 songs. May this music be passed down for generations to come, inspiring others to write, rebel and create their own destiny. As it says on the side of an old brick building on East 7thStreet in the Lower East Side, “The future is unwritten.”

Truly,
Jesse Malin

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GATES OF THE WEST FESTIVAL COMES TO LONDON, DINGWALLS

A night celebrating the Music and Message of Joe Strummer and The Clash FEATURING JESSE MALIN AND VERY SPECIAL US and UK GUESTS

Love it to Life, in conjunction with The Joe Strummer Foundation, Wendigo Productions and Vive Le Rock, is proud to bring the Gates of the West Festival to London on Friday, September 7th at Dingwalls at 7:30. Celebrating the music and life of Joe Strummer and the Clash, all proceeds for Gates of the West go to benefit Music and Memory UK, a nonprofit organisation that brings music to the elderly and infirm suffering from Alzheimers and dementia to reconnect with the world through music-triggered memories, and the Joe Strummer Foundation.

Gates of the West is the brain child of musician Jesse Malin and DJ Jeff Raspe, having first began with sold-out US events in 2017, and will take place in both New York City and London this year. Appropriately, the London event will be at the legendary Dingwalls in Camden, just next door to the old Clash rehearsal studio (Rehearsals Rehearsals), as well as next to the alleyway where the iconic Self-Titled album cover was shot. Malin says the name of the festival came from the Clash song of the same title which celebrates the journey from “Camden Town station to 44th and 8th,” connecting our worlds with a guitar and a dream”.

Jesse Malin and his band, featuring Catherine Popper (Jack White / Ryan Adams), Randy Schrager (Scissor Sisters), Rob Clores (Black Crowes), Derek Cruz (Alejandro Escovedo), will be backing an all-star tribute to Joe Strummer (from the 101ers to the Mescaleros) and the Clash, featuring appearances by members of The Mescaleros, Glen Matlock (The Sex Pistols), Craig Finn and Tad Kubler (The Hold Steady), Joey and Jakob Armstrong + Sebastian Mueller (SWMRS), Rat Boy, Mark Stewart (Pop Group), Zoe Devlin, Ranking Roger (The Beat) and Chuck Prophet, among many others (and some special surprise guests). In addition, filmmaker Julien Temple will be showing rare Clash footage, Clash tour manager Johnny Green, will share stories from his time with the band, and several guest DJs will host a Soul Dance Party to follow the event, in the spirit of those crazy nights with Joe and friends dancing on tables all over the world.

“We want to bring the energy of Joe and The Clash back to Camden for one wild, meaningful, and epic night,” explains Malin, “In these dark times we need the spirit of Joe Strummer and The Clash more than ever. So many of lives have been changed by their music and message, and it will continue to live on through the generations.” As Joe once famously said, “the future is unwritten.”

This year taking place at The Bowery Ballroom (6 Delancey St) on Saturday August 25 2018, featuring Jesse Malin & his band with an all-star Joe Strummer/The Clash tribute set celebrating Joe Strummer's 66th birthday to end the night.
Last August we put together Summer StrummerJam Asbury Park at the Stone Pony. With very little time to coordinate and promote, we sold the show out with over 700 attendees! It was a spectacular night that featured local Jersey Shore acts The Vansaders and Matty Carlock opening the night. Followed by Jesse Malin & his band doing a headlining set. Ending with a 20 song Strummer/Clash tribute set with Jesse & his band acting as the house band. We had special guest singers including Brian Fallon; Craig Finn & Tad Kubler of The Hold Steady; Patrick Stickles of Titus Andronicus; Ted Leo; Richard Barone of The Bongos; Daniel Rey of The Dictators; Mike Montali & Jonathan Bonilla of Hollis Brown; Anthony D'Amato; Don DiLego; RB Korbet of Even Worse; Danny Clinch; Supla of Brothers Of Brazil; Kris Gruen and more.

Proceeds from the show will again benefit Music And Memory and the Joe Strummer Foundation as part of their StrummerJam initiative. After last year's show we donated $10,000 to Music & Memory and just over $4000 to the Joe Strummer Foundation.

Tickets will go on sale Friday March 30 2018 at 12noon. $25 in advance/$30 day of show. Tickets will be available at boweryballroom.com and the Mercury Lounge box office (217 East Houston St) free of service charges every Thursday through Saturday from 12n-6p.
